Day 2 - Tuatapere to Okaka Hut
| You will start your fi rst day of walking by heading inland from the coast and your lunch stop will be at
our Waterbridge shelter. After lunch the track gets a lot steeper as you climb the ridge to Stag Point where
the bush opens up and you get a beautiful view of Te Waewae Bay. You can actually see Okaka Lodge
from Stag Point. The bush gives way to sub alpine tussock grasses and its not long till the Okaka Lodge
(890m) and the stunning loop track now. Okaka Lodge is such a welcome sight for so many people. Often because its not at all what they are expecting, its not a DOC hut. This accommodation offers you a super king bed and a hot shower on arrival, You can unwind and relax on the comfy leather couches infront of our gas fire, appreciating the beautiful views before your three course evening meal. After dinner, wander around the loop and take your time admiring our sandstone tors and mountain tarns at sunset. (B, L, D) Walking distance: 19kms/7 -9 hours |
Day 3 - Okaka Lodge to Port Craig Lodge
| As the track takes you along the Hump Ridge you are surrounded by beautiful views. The Cameron
Mountains to your right, Waitutu Teraces just below, rugged South Coast in front and Te Waewae Bay to
the left. Breathtaking. As you walk the surrounding bush changes with your decent. When you finish your decent of the Hump Ridge you are met by our historic viaducts. Four in total, you will walk over three - the largest being the Percy Burn Viaduct; largest wooden viaduct in the world. Port Craig Village, where you spend your second night is full of history. Mussel beach is only five minutes walk and you have a good chance of seeing the resident Hector's dolphins playing in the waves around the old wharf poles. Such a beautiful spot, you wont want to leave. (B, L, D) Walking distance: 19kms/7 - 9 hours |
Day 4 - Port Craig Lodge to Tuatapere
| The easiest of the three days of walking, this day you walk through undulating native bush and along
deserted golden beaches. Have a look for fresh deer prints in the sand, they like to come out and walk
along the beach as well. Blowholes beach has a ring of rocks along the waters edge, depending on the tide you will see why they call it Blowholes... Back to Tuatapere, at the end of your journey you will bid farewell to new found walking buddies and swap email addresses for photos when you arrive home again - proud of your Hump Ridge Track accomplishment and unable to forget those beautiful sights. (B, L) Walking distance: 17kms/5 - 7 hours |
