Hanmer Springs
The hot, soothing, mineral pools of Hanmer Springs are a relaxing, rejuvenating indulgence and the main attraction to this peaceful, alpine village. Maori would often rest in the hot springs to break their journey to the West Coast in search of greenstone. Hanmer Springs provides a soothing respite at the end of a day of touring the local area. With jet boating through the Waiau Gorge, mountain biking, bungy jumping, orienteering, horse trekking, golf, skiing at Mt Lyford or travelling in eight wheel drive, all terrain amphibious vehicles, you will enjoy relaxing in the thermal pools all the more. Visit the famous Molesworth and Rainbow sheep stations, travel the wine trails of the Waipara Valley, known for cool climate wines, or wine and dine in the town's fine restaurants. Just sixty kilometres away is Lewis Pass and the Japanese style Maruia Hot Springs Thermal Resort. Also in the region is Gore Bay, with impressive, fluted cliffs of siltstone, referred to as cathedrals. On the first and third Sundays of each month, the Weka Pass historic railway line takes passengers on a seven kilometre journey from Waipara to Waikari. Special Events
